•Keep your house well lighted on both the inside and outside.
•Ask your Neighborhood Watch or local citizens’ group to patrol your community.
•Report any suspicious or criminal activities to your police or sheriff’s department.
Follow these tips to make sure even the scariest costumes are safe.
•Try makeup instead of masks; it does not obstruct vision the way masks can.
•Keep costumes short to ensure that the only trip taken is the one around the neighborhood.
•Look for brightly colored costumes, attach reflector strips to costumes and bags, and remind trick-or-treaters to carry glow sticks and flashlights.
Make sure your trick-or-treater’s night in the neighborhood will be safe and fun.
•Older kids should trick-or-treat in groups. Kids walking around alone are not as safe as those walking in groups.
•A parent or trusted neighbor should accompany younger kids.
•Review the route for trick-or-treating beforehand and set a time for when kids should be home. Also, have a plan if your child separates accidentally from his or her friends or from you.
Remember that the treats still need scrutiny before anyone eats them.
•Remind your children not to eat any treats until they have come home. To help ensure this, feed them a meal or a substantial snack before they go out.

International TEFL Academy Announces Results of First Global Teaching Abroad Photo Contest
The contest, which featured photos submitted by ITA alumni teaching English in dozens of countries around the world, was won by Thomas Paeme, whose photo of himself teaching English in Cambodia received the most votes. Winning photos and other entries can be viewed on the International TEFL Academy website.
“This photo contest brings to life the possibilities of living and working abroad for those who earn their TEFL certification and pursue opportunities teaching English abroad,” said Bruce Jones, President of International TEFL Academy, a Chicago-based TEFL training school that certifies and provide job search guidance to 1,200 aspiring English teachers each year.
According to Jones, International TEFL Academy alumni who earned a TEFL certification and are teaching English in more than two dozen nations, submitted photos from locations ranging from Italy, Peru and China to Italy, Brazil and Qatar.
“As soon as I saw the promotion for the photo contest, I wanted to participate right away," said Paeme, whose grand prize was an Apple iPad. “My amazing teaching experiences in Thailand and Cambodia were the first things that crossed my mind and although I had a lot of beautiful scenery pictures as well, I opted for a picture that included the wonderful children I worked with.”
First prize in the contest was awarded to Charlotte Hammond, who entry depicted sunset in Venice. “I'm happy to be an active International TEFL Academy alum and I'm delighted to be honored in the contest,” said Hammond, 25 of New York. “It was a pleasure to participate and see the work and travels of other alumni through sharing photographs." Hammond has been teaching English in Trento, Italy and will be moving to South Korea in January 2013 to begin teaching there.
“I have never looked back to my old career and my old life. Teaching has been such a challenge but overall such an invaluable and rewarding experience,” Hammond said of her experience teaching English abroad.
“Teaching English abroad provides very realistic opportunities to English speakers of all backgrounds to live and work as a local in up to 100 countries around the world,” said Jones. “The vast majority of our students and alumni, including those who participated in this contest, had no background in teaching and no degree in education,” Jones added. “But with a TEFL certification and job search guidance from our Student Affairs Department, our students are able to realize their dreams of seeing the world and getting paid to do it. It’s very rewarding to see.”
